Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a wonderful spring. This will be an extra brief newsletter without the usual structure and details. It has been a busy week here at the farm and I really wanted to get a newsletter out to you today so you can see what we've been up to!
Greenhouse updates:
We transplanted peppers, ginger and basil. We started trellising the tomatoes and beans, which are already getting pretty big. We are going to start harvesting beans towards the end of May and tomatoes/cucumbers in early June! Cucumbers are getting planted next week.
Field updates:
Robin spread compost out in the fields while we anticipate the start of field planting. Jess and the team have been working in our perennial gardens with the peonies, raspberries, rhubarb and daffodils. They have also been tending to our "Children's Garden" by the playground and we are very excited to have more shaded picnic areas for you this summer. You can bring a picnic and try the snacks from our store including the popular Happy Pops popsicles which are back in stock! These Toronto made popsicles are so tasty and only have 3-4 ingredients. Our U-Pick flowers will be back start of July as well and stay tuned for more information regarding flower arranging workshops.
Events:
Seedling sale
We kicked off our seedling sale today and we are so happy have had such an amazing turn-out. I will order a lot more sourdough bread and cinnamon buns for next week I promise!
As for plants, we have vegetables, herbs and flowers including eucalyptus. Come over and let's chat gardening!
Peony Fest
We are getting all geared up and excited for Peony fest June 15th! Come for the flowers, the playground, the raffle, the food, drinks and the live music! Kids concert with Sing Song Party Time Derek from 11h-12h and folk music for all with the amazing band Blue Bird from 2h-3h. We can't wait! If you are interested in volunteering for the event, send us an email or message us on social media or just pop by the store. Volunteers go home with complementary vegetables and flowers.

Farm Tours We are setting several dates for farm open house/tours so stay tuned for more information coming soon!
CSA
Our Summer CSA starts up June 12th with cucumbers and beans (and more!) and tomatoes following not far behind along with all the other delicious seasonal vegetables. Perks of the program include unlimited vacation holds on your order, customizable pre-packed boxes and various add-on options from our online store. We also have a flower share this year for those who can't get enough of flower season.
Lots of fresh greens available in our CSA
Farmstore
I had so much fun over the last couple weeks giving the farmstore a little makeover so come on over to see the progress. We have more of Jess's amazing paintings up on the walls and new products on the shelves, including Organic Meadow dairy products, many drink options and more snacks. Popsicles and ice cream are back in stock too! Oh and daffodils are ready and available in bouquets. Come on over and let us know what you would like to see us carrying asides from our veggies. And don't forget, we receive fresh organic sourdough bread from Devon on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Veggies will be a little leaner in the next few weeks... We are so thankful for your continued support. Spring can be a tough time for farmers as we wait for the crops to be ready. We still have lots of root vegetables from last year and an abundance of fresh salad mix, arugula, spinach and baby kale. Cilantro and dill will be back soon as will bunches of kale and chard. Asparagus, beans, green onion and rhubarb are just around the corner!
Coming soon! Asparagus, rhubarb and more!
That's it for today! Thank you all for reading our newsletters. It is extremely gratifying to receive all your feedback. So much love for your all!
Happy Spring,
The Roots and Shoots Team
